Every Diwali, someone in the family asks it — usually a child, sometimes a colleague from another country, occasionally ourselves: why exactly do we light all these diyas?
The short answer is a homecoming. The long answer is one of the best stories ever told. This guide gives you both — plus a version small enough for a five-year-old, the other stories behind the same night, the Diwali 2026 dates, and more than thirty wishes that carry the story when you send them.
Why is Diwali celebrated? Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. In the story most of North India tells, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya with Sita and Lakshman after fourteen years of exile and the defeat of Ravana, on the new-moon night of Kartik, and the people lit rows of lamps to welcome him home. Deepavali means "a row of lamps". In 2026, Diwali falls on Sunday, 8 November.

The Diwali story in one minute
- Exile. Prince Rama of Ayodhya is sent to the forest for fourteen years. His wife Sita and brother Lakshman go with him.
- The kidnapping. Ravana, the ten-headed king of Lanka, tricks them with a golden deer and carries Sita away.
- The search. Rama meets Hanuman, who leaps across the ocean, finds Sita and sets Lanka on fire.
- The bridge. The vanar sena builds Ram Setu, a bridge of floating stones, to reach Lanka.
- The victory. Rama defeats Ravana — the day celebrated as Dussehra.
- The homecoming. Rama, Sita and Lakshman fly home in the Pushpak Vimaan. Ayodhya lights lamps in every home. That night becomes Diwali.
The Diwali story, chapter by chapter
1. Ayodhya — the prince who gave up a throne
King Dasharatha of Ayodhya was about to crown his eldest son, Rama. But years earlier he had promised Queen Kaikeyi two wishes, and she asked for them now: her own son Bharata on the throne, and Rama in the forest for fourteen years. Rama accepted without a word of anger. Sita refused to stay behind, and Lakshman followed his brother.
2. Panchavati — the golden deer
In the Panchavati forest, a shimmering golden deer appeared near their hut. It was the demon Maricha in disguise, sent by Ravana. Sita asked for it, Rama chased it, and when a cry for help rang out, Lakshman went after him. Alone, Sita was carried off by Ravana in his flying chariot. As they flew, she dropped her ornaments so Rama could follow the trail.
3. The search — Hanuman's leap
Searching the south, Rama and Lakshman met Hanuman, who became Rama's most devoted friend. Hanuman grew to an enormous size and leapt across the ocean to Lanka.
4. Lanka Dahan — the city on fire
In the Ashok Vatika garden, Hanuman found Sita and gave her Rama's ring as proof that help was coming. Ravana's guards captured him and set his tail on fire to humiliate him. Hanuman simply leapt from roof to roof, and the golden city of Lanka went up in flames.
5. Ram Setu — a bridge of faith
To cross the sea with an army, the vanar sena of monkeys and bears built a bridge of stones. In the popular telling, every stone carried Rama's name — and floated.
6. The battle — the arrow of light
The war was long. In the end Rama faced Ravana himself and defeated him with a divine arrow. That victory of good over evil is celebrated as Dussehra (Vijayadashami), when effigies of Ravana are burned across India.
7. The reunion
Rama and Sita were finally together again. With Lakshman and Hanuman, they boarded the Pushpak Vimaan, the flying chariot, and turned towards home.
8. The homecoming — the first Diwali
Fourteen years after he left, Rama came back to Ayodhya on the dark new-moon night of Kartik. The people had no way to light up the whole city except one: every family placed rows of clay lamps outside their home. The dark night blazed. That is the moment we are recreating every time we light a diya on Diwali.

That is why we light diyas on Diwali — to remember that good always wins.
दिवाली की कहानी (हिंदी में)
बहुत समय पहले अयोध्या के राजकुमार श्रीराम को चौदह वर्ष के लिए वन जाना पड़ा। उनके साथ माता सीता और भाई लक्ष्मण भी गए। लंका का राजा रावण सीता जी को उठा ले गया। वीर हनुमान समुद्र पार करके सीता जी तक पहुँचे, और वानर सेना ने पत्थरों का पुल बनाया। श्रीराम ने रावण को हराकर सीता जी को वापस पाया। जब वे अयोध्या लौटे, तो पूरे नगर ने दीये जलाकर उनका स्वागत किया। इसीलिए हम दिवाली पर दीये जलाते हैं — क्योंकि अंत में जीत हमेशा अच्छाई और रोशनी की होती है।
दीपावली क्यों मनाई जाती है? श्रीराम के चौदह वर्ष के वनवास और रावण पर विजय के बाद अयोध्या लौटने की खुशी में अयोध्यावासियों ने दीप जलाए थे। यही रात दीपावली कहलाई। इसी रात माँ लक्ष्मी और भगवान गणेश की पूजा भी होती है।
Why Diwali is called the festival of lights
The name says it. Deepavali is Sanskrit: deepa (lamp) + avali (row) — a row of lamps. Diwali falls on Amavasya, the new-moon night, the darkest night of the month. Lighting it up is the whole point: one small flame against the biggest darkness, multiplied by every home on the street.
Three things people often mix up:
- Dussehra celebrates Rama defeating Ravana.
- Diwali, about twenty days later, celebrates Rama coming home.
- Lakshmi Puja happens on Diwali night itself, for prosperity in the year ahead.
The other stories behind Diwali
Rama's homecoming is the best-known story, but India celebrates the same night for several reasons.
