The Diwali Story
Not a Diwali card, an animated story the viewer plays through, told in eight chapters with narration and cinematic touches: letterbox bars in the darkest moments, depth parallax that follows the finger or phone tilt, golden light wipes between chapters and god rays at dawn. The viewer lights the evening diyas in Ayodhya, follows the trail of Sita's jewels after Ravana's storm chariot carries her away, and swipes up to send Hanuman across the ocean. Hanuman gives Sita Rama's ring in the Ashok Vatika, then one tap sends him leaping across Lanka's rooftops with his tail on fire until the city is ablaze. They build Ram Setu stone by stone, watch the vanar sena march across. Then they pull back like a slingshot to draw Rama's divine arrow and release it to defeat darkness, and Ravana's ten heads dissolve into light one by one. After the dawn reunion, Ayodhya waits in the dark until the viewer taps, and a wave of diyas spreads from that spot while sky lanterns rise wherever they tap. At the end they launch one rocket: the sparks spell the recipient's name in the sky, "Happy Diwali" shimmers in with your message and photo, and fireworks keep bursting on their own. Characters have jointed rigs that walk, blink and change expression. The story reads in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil or Telugu. The divine arrow and the final fireworks come with sound and a phone vibration. Every interaction plays itself after a few seconds, so the story never gets stuck and video export plays it start to finish. A hand-drawn Raksha Bandhan story told in five phases on doodle paper — it opens on a knock at a bandhanwar-strung door — knock knock, your bhai is here — that swings open on the rakhi and the title, then the puja thali fills up with diya, roli, rice and mithai, the brother and sister have their usual nok-jhok (he wants the gift first, she pulls his ear), she does his tilak and ties the thread around his held-out wrist, and the gift box springs open with your message under a marigold petal shower. It plays through on its own; tap to skip ahead or jump between phases.
