Coming of Age Day (成人の日, Seijin no Hi) is Japan's national holiday on the second Monday of January, when everyone turning twenty is welcomed into adulthood.
Cities hold a seijin-shiki ceremony with speeches and a pledge; the new adults dress in furisode or montsuki hakama, visit a shrine, take photographs, meet old classmates and share a first legal toast with the family. Families send 成人おめでとう, congratulations on coming of age.
