What to write for each of the eight nights of Hanukkah — for family, friends, your partner, kids, colleagues and the people far away — plus Chag Sameach and the blessings with their meanings, the dates for 2026, and a free animated Hanukkah card where they light the first candle and a spark crosses the city to their window.

— one light in the window.

Short answer: the best Hanukkah wish does what the holiday does — takes one small light and makes it mean more than it should. Open with Happy Hanukkah or Chag Sameach, add one specific reason the person makes your life brighter, and close with a wish for their eight nights. Below: eight nights of messages for every kind of person, the blessings with their meanings, the 2026 dates, and a free animated Hanukkah card that lights one candle for every reason and sends a spark across the city to someone far away.

The holiday ends at nightfall on Saturday, 12 December. Candles are lit after sundown, placed from right to left and lit from left to right, newest first. On Friday evening they are lit before the Shabbat candles.

Before you send

Send your wish on the first night. People are at the menorah, phones in hand, and the whole week is still ahead of them. A card that lights one candle per night keeps reading right until the eighth.

Why the "one small light" image works

Hanukkah's story is about scarcity that turned out to be enough. One day's oil, eight days of light. That is why the best Hanukkah messages are quiet ones: not "may your season sparkle" but "you are the light I didn't expect to last, and it did."

Every wish below borrows that shape: a small thing, a longer-than-expected light, one person.

Eight nights, eight reasons

The idea that makes a Hanukkah message land is to give each candle a reason. One line per night, in the second person. Specific beats grand — a Saturday, a phone call, the thing only they do.

For a partner:

Night one. For choosing me, every day.

Night two. For making me laugh when I need it most.

Night three. For believing in me before I did.

Night four. For the little things you think I don't notice.

Night five. For every memory we've made together.

Night six. For making ordinary evenings feel like something.

Night seven. For being exactly you.

Night eight. For being the one I'll always be grateful for.

For a parent:

Night one. For every candle you lit for me. Night two. For the stories you told at the table. Night three. For believing in me, always. Night four. For the little things you never stopped doing.

Night five. For every Hanukkah that felt like home. Night six. For making ordinary days feel safe. Night seven. For being you. Night eight. For being someone I'll always be grateful for.

This is exactly how The Light That Found You is built: eight candles, each with one of your lines, and the person you send it to taps to light the first one. Leave any candle blank and the card fills it with the line written for your relationship.

Hanukkah wishes for family

Happy Hanukkah to the people who taught me what the light is for. Eight nights, one family, more love than the menorah can hold. 🕎

Mom, Dad — every candle I light, I light the way you showed me. Thank you for every Hanukkah that felt like home. Chag Sameach.

To my grandparents: you are the shamash of this family, the light that lights all the others. Happy Hanukkah, with all my love.

The gelt is optional. The latkes are mandatory. The love is guaranteed. Chag Urim Sameach, my dear family!

Hanukkah isn't eight days. It's the feeling of everyone home at once, squinting at the same small flames. Can't wait.

Hanukkah wishes for friends

Friends like you are the real light of the season. The candles are just there to make it official. Chag Sameach!

May the miracle this year be that you finally win at dreidel. Happy Hanukkah! 🎲

You bring more light into my life than a fully lit menorah on the eighth night. Thank you for being you.

The candles burn for about half an hour. Our friendship has lasted a lot longer than that. Happy Hanukkah.

Hanukkah wishes for the one you love

Tonight I lit a candle for someone who makes my whole life brighter. It was for you. It always is. Happy Hanukkah, my love.

One small flame was meant to last one night. It lasted eight. Maybe that's what love does.

Of all the lights in my life, yours is the one I'd never want to lose. Happy Hanukkah to the person I'd choose every night.

You are my shamash — the light I use to light everything else. Chag Urim Sameach.

Hanukkah wishes for someone far away

The hardest ones to write, and the ones that matter most. Say three things: that the table feels different, that the light hasn't changed, and that a candle here is theirs.

Maybe distance changes where we are. It doesn't change what connects us. Chag Sameach from this window to yours.

The table feels quieter without you, but the light hasn't changed at all. Happy Hanukkah. We're saving your seat.

Same candles, same blessing, same time, different cities. Happy Hanukkah. Call me when you light yours.

No matter how far you go, there is always a light on for you here. Happy Hanukkah, from home.

Eight nights is long enough for a light to travel anywhere. Mine is on its way to you.

Hanukkah wishes for kids and grandchildren

Happy Hanukkah to the brightest light in our house! May your dreidel land on gimel every single time. 🎲🕎

Grandma and Grandpa's menorah is lit, and our favourite grandchild is in every flame. Happy Hanukkah, little one.

Light the candles, spin the dreidel, eat the latkes, repeat for eight nights. That's the whole plan. Happy Hanukkah!

Hanukkah wishes for colleagues, clients and the team

Wishing you and your family a bright and joyful Hanukkah. Thank you for a year of partnership — here's to more light in the year ahead.

Happy Hanukkah to our team! May these eight nights bring you rest, good food and the people you love most.

To a colleague who brings light to every project: Happy Hanukkah. Enjoy every one of the eight nights.

Happy Hanukkah! Here's to a season of light, latkes and no urgent emails after 5 pm.

Before you send

If you don't celebrate Hanukkah yourself, "Happy Hanukkah" or "Chag Sameach" is exactly right. Don't swap in "Merry Christmas", and don't worry about the spelling — Hanukkah, Chanukah and Hanukah are all accepted.

What the card actually does

The Light That Found You plays for well under a minute. A dark room on a snowy night; someone walks in carrying a single lit candle, the only light there is. The recipient taps, and a spark runs from the shamash to all eight candles, each catching with a soft bloom, until the whole room is warm. A moment to stand in it — every candle has put a star in the window — and then a spark lifts off the eighth flame onto their hand. They tap to send it: it leaves through the window, crosses the snow-covered city along those stars, and reaches a dark window where someone looks up. A pause. They tap once more, and the menorah there lights, candle after candle. Two windows glow across the city; one night became eight, one light became many. The last page has both of them beside one menorah, your photo of the two of you, two memory polaroids, their name, your eight reasons, your message and your greeting — and a button that sends the light back to you.

Choose both characters, the relationship, apart or together, up to three photos, every one of the eight lines and the message. It is free, needs no account, and the link opens on any phone. More on the Hanukkah card page, with the steps in the Hanukkah card online guide.

The one line to remember

You don't need a long message. You need one small, specific light: the thing this person did that lasted longer than it should have. Say that, and the eight nights do the rest.

Know someone who needs this?

Send them the guide before the day sneaks up.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do you write in a Hanukkah card?
Open with Happy Hanukkah or Chag Sameach, add one line about the light the person brings into your life — a memory, a thank-you, a reason — and close with a wish for their eight nights. The strongest Hanukkah messages borrow the holiday's own image: a small light that lasted longer than anyone expected.
How do you say Happy Hanukkah in Hebrew?
Chag Sameach (חג שמח) means 'happy holiday' and is right on every night. Chag Urim Sameach (חג אורים שמח) is the Hanukkah-specific 'happy Festival of Lights'. Hanukkah Sameach is simply 'happy Hanukkah', and in Yiddish 'a freilichen Chanukah' is the version grandparents use.
When is Hanukkah 2026?
Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, 4 December and ends at nightfall on Saturday, 12 December. The first candle is lit on the evening of 4 December and the eighth on the evening of 11 December. In 2027 it runs from 24 December to 1 January 2028.
Why does Hanukkah last eight nights?
When the Temple in Jerusalem was rededicated after the Maccabean victory, only one day's worth of pure oil was found for the menorah — and it burned for eight days, long enough to press new oil. Each night one more candle is lit, so the light grows rather than fades.
What can I say to a Jewish friend if I'm not Jewish?
'Happy Hanukkah' or 'Chag Sameach', warmly meant, is exactly right. Don't substitute 'Merry Christmas', and don't worry about the spelling — Hanukkah, Chanukah and Hanukah are all accepted transliterations of the same Hebrew word.
Can I send a Hanukkah card to family in another country?
Yes. The Light That Found You card on MomentoCard is built for exactly that: choose 'apart', and a spark leaves your window, crosses a snowy city and lights the menorah in theirs. The link opens on any phone in any country, free, with no app or account.
Is the Hanukkah card free?
Yes. Making and opening it are both free and need no account. You share a link that plays full-screen on any phone, and the recipient can send the light back to you at the end.
