How to Make a Hanukkah Card Online (That Lights a Candle for Every Reason)
A paper Hanukkah card arrives on one night and says one thing. An animated card that plays — someone at a dark window who asks them to light the first candle, eight candles that glow for eight reasons you're grateful for them, a spark that crosses a snow-covered city and lights the menorah in their window — is the one they replay on the second night, forward to the family group, and answer. This guide covers how to make one online in about three minutes, what to write for each candle, and how it compares with a paper card, a Paperless Post or Hallmark ecard and a WhatsApp sticker.
The short answer
To make a Hanukkah card online, open The Light That Found You on MomentoCard, choose a character for you and one for them, pick who they are to you and whether you are apart or together, type eight short reasons you are grateful for them (one per candle), add up to three photos and a message of up to 360 characters, choose Happy Hanukkah, Chag Sameach or Chag Urim Sameach, then share the link. The recipient taps to light the first candle and watches a one-minute story; at the end they can send the light back and you are notified. It is free, needs no account and opens on any phone in any country.
A one-minute story, not a picture
Eight phases in one camera move: one window, the first light, eight reasons, eight little lights, the light travels, it found you, two windows, the gift.
They light the first candle
One tap is all the card asks. If they don't tap, the candle lights by itself and the story carries on.
Eight reasons become eight candles
Short lines you write — or, for any you leave blank, the lines written for your relationship: partner, parent, child, sibling, friend or family.
Apart or together
Apart sends the spark across the city to their window. Together keeps it in one room, where they walk in and the light lands between you.
Photos on the final page
Two memory photos hang as polaroids beside the two of them, and a photo of you both above the menorah. Without photos the page simply shows the two characters.
Send the light back
A button on the final page posts a reply — you get a notification that your light reached them. Free, and no account on either side.

Steps to make the Hanukkah card
- 1
Open the template
Go to The Light That Found You on MomentoCard. It opens in the browser; no account needed.
- 2
Choose the two of you
A character for you and one for them (Noah, Maya, Eli or Leah), who they are to you, and apart or together.
- 3
Write eight reasons
One short line per candle, up to 64 characters each, shown on the final page. Leave any blank and the story uses the line written for your relationship.
- 4
Add photos and your message
Two memory photos, one of you both, a message of up to 360 characters, and the greeting you want on the last page.
- 5
Share the link
Send it on WhatsApp, iMessage or email on the first night. They tap to light the first candle and can send the light back at the end.
Frequently asked questions
When is Hanukkah 2026?
Sundown on Friday, 4 December 2026 to nightfall on Saturday, 12 December 2026. The first candle is lit on 4 December and the eighth on 11 December.
What do I write for each candle?
One short reason, in the second person: 'For being there.' 'For making me laugh.' 'For believing in me before I did.' Specific beats grand — a Saturday, a phone call, a thing only they do. Leave any blank and the card fills it in for your relationship.
Can I send it to family in another country?
Yes. Choose apart, and the spark crosses the city from your window to theirs. The link opens on any phone in the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK or Israel with no app or account.
Does it work without photos?
Yes. Without photos a glowing dreidel with the letter nun comes out of the spin instead, and the final page simply shows the two characters beside the menorah.
Is the card free?
Yes — making and opening it are free and need no account. You can also export it as a video for Instagram or the family group.
How is it different from an ecard?
An ecard is a picture with your message under it. This is a story with two characters that your details change — the reasons become candles, the photos come out of the dreidel, apart or together changes where the light goes, and the recipient can send the light back.
